Horologion is one of the rarest and most enigmatic carabid , containing two known of troglomorphic ground beetles to the middle Appalachian Mountains. The genus remained for over 60 years after its description in 1932, with a second species discovered in Virginia in 1991 and described in 2024. Phylogenetic analysis places Horologion in supertribe Trechitae as sister to the Gondwanan tribe Bembidarenini, making tribe Horologionini a relict lineage with no close relatives in the Northern Hemisphere.

Pronunciation

How to pronounce Horologion: //hɔːroʊˈloʊdʒiːɒn//

Identification

Distinguished from other Trechinae by its troglomorphic and phylogenetic placement. The two occur on opposite sides of the high mountains of the middle Appalachians. Distinguished from superficially similar anilline or trechine beetles by molecular and morphological characters supporting its placement in Horologionini rather than Anillini, Tachyini, Trechini, Patrobini, or Psydrini.

Habitat

Terrestrial epikarst; specimens collected in or near drip pools. The extreme rarity of collection is explained by the inaccessibility of epikarst , which has not been directly sampled.

Distribution

Middle Appalachian Mountains: West Virginia (type locality of H. speokoites, small cave) and Virginia (Bath County, H. hubbardi). The two occur on opposite sides of the high mountains, suggesting this region as the center of for ancestral . Additional populations and species are predicted but remain undiscovered.

Behavior

Most specimens have been found dead in or near drip pools. The extreme rarity of live specimens is attributed to the difficulty of accessing epikarst rather than low .

Ecological Role

Important component of Appalachian biodiversity; represents a relict lineage with unique phylogenetic diversity in the region and no close relatives known in the Northern Hemisphere.

Human Relevance

Of scientific interest as one of the rarest in the world and as a relict lineage illuminating carabid and Appalachian .
