Amara californica is a black-colored ground beetle in the Carabidae. It belongs to the large Amara, which contains numerous of small to medium-sized carabid beetles. The species has two recognized : A. c. californica and A. c. costaricensis.

There is conflicting authorship information in sources: Catalogue of Life lists Motschulsky, 1859 as the authority with status as synonym, while GBIF, NCBI, and other sources list Dejean, 1828 as the accepted authority. The is placed in the subgenus Curtonotus by some classifications.

Two are recognized: Amara californica californica Dejean, 1828 and Amara californica costaricensis (Bates, 1878).
