Species Composition

Seven have been described: Ptyoiulus conveanus, P. coveanus, P. ectenes, P. georgiensis, P. impressus, P. montanus, and P. pennsylvanicus. Ptyoiulus impressus was originally described by Say in 1821, indicating long recognition of this . Ptyoiulus pennsylvanicus was described by Brandt in 1840. Ptyoiulus ectenes was transferred from the Iulus by Bollman in 1887.

Taxonomic History

The was established by Orator F. Cook in 1895. The Ptyoiulinae was erected to accommodate this genus within Parajulidae. The genus has remained stable in its placement, though -level has been revised by Chamberlin in 1943.
