It was first described by Harrison Gray Dyar Jr. in 1914 from specimens collected in Panama, and later recorded from Florida. The genus Moodnodes was established by Herbert H. Neunzig in 1990 to accommodate this species.

Identification
The only in the Moodnodes; separation from related genera in Phycitinae requires examination of genitalia and wing venation patterns. The original description placed it in Ephestiodes, indicating superficial resemblance to that genus.
