Taxonomic history

The was established by Hübner in 1819. Many were transferred from other genera, particularly from Sylepta and related genera, during Hampson's extensive revisions of Pyralidae and Crambidae in the early 1900s. The African species were revised by Ghesquière in the 1940s.

Over 100 are currently recognized, making Phostria one of the larger in Spilomelinae. New species continue to be described, particularly from under-sampled tropical regions.
