These butterflies are renowned for their striking iridescent blue wing surfaces, which result from structural coloration rather than pigmentation. Wingspans range from 7.5 cm in M. rhodopteron to 20 cm in M. hecuba. The genus occurs primarily in South America, Mexico, and Central America.
