The genus contains approximately 30 described distributed primarily across the Northern Hemisphere, with records from Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. Species in this genus are generally small with wingspans typical of gelechiid moths. The genus includes both day-flying and species, with some exhibiting characteristic patterns of pale ground color with darker markings.

Taxonomic History

The was established by Janse in 1958 to accommodate previously placed in related genera. Several species have been transferred to or from Pseudotelphusa, with two former species (P. decuriella and P. fugitivella) now excluded.

Species Diversity

The includes 29 currently recognized , with several described relatively recently (P. floridana, P. landryi, and P. ontariensis in 2011 by Lee). The oldest described species is P. scalella (originally Phalaena scalella Scopoli, 1763).
