Trachymyrmex nogalensis

Trachymyrmex nogalensis is a fungus-gardening from southern Arizona, described by Byars in 1951. As a member of the attine tribe, it cultivates fungal gardens as its primary food source. The was first characterized in a 2007 taxonomic revision, having previously been undescribed. The species is one of nine North American Trachymyrmex species recognized in that revision.

Taxonomic history

First described by Byars in 1951. The was characterized for the first time in the 2007 revision by Mueller et al., having previously been undescribed.

Phylogenetic context

Trachymyrmex is a graded basal to the (Atta and Acromyrmex). T. nogalensis was included in a molecular phylogenetic analysis using COI and EF1-α sequences, which supported the taxonomic conclusions of the revision.
