The genus exhibits a complex biogeographic pattern, with species-groups distributed across the Ethiopian Region, Australian Region, Old World Palearctic, and tropicopolitan areas. Taxonomic analyses have identified at least 12 species-groups, with significant centers of endemicity in the Cape Region of South Africa. The genus includes several subgenera, notably Locutius and Isioscytus, which show transcontinental distributions extending from Africa to Australia.

Identification

Members of Plinthisus can be distinguished from related rhyparochromid by combinations of morphological characters including metathoracic structures, wing stridulitra, male genital capsule and claspers, phallus , and spermatheca structure. -level identification requires examination of these detailed morphological features, particularly the male genitalia and prothoracic leg structure. The genus is currently organized into at least 12 species-groups based on these characters, with five groups recognized in the Australian Region.

  • IsioscytusTreated as a subgenus of Plinthisus rather than a separate ; shares transcontinental distribution pattern and morphological features with other Plinthisus -groups.
