Tipula dorsimacula is a large in the , first described by Walker in 1848. It is one of two recognized within the , with the nominate subspecies T. dorsimacula dorsimacula and T. dorsimacula shasta described by Alexander in 1919. The species belongs to the diverse Tipula, which contains hundreds of species across the Northern Hemisphere.
