picture-winged fly
Species Guides
3Melieria is a of picture-winged flies in the Ulidiidae, characterized by distinctive wing patterning with dark spots or blotches on a lighter background. The genus contains multiple across Europe and the Palaearctic region, with typically active from May to August. Species vary in size from small (4–5 mm) to medium (6 mm or longer) to relatively large (8–10 mm). Several species have been the focus of genomic sequencing as part of the Darwin Tree of Life Project.

Habitat
occupy diverse wetland ranging from coastal saltmarshes and brackish marshes to inland wetlands and pond margins. Coastal species occur in upper saltmarsh zones dominated by Saltmarsh Rush (Juncus gerardii) and Saltmarsh Grass (Puccinellia maritima), as well as brackish ditches with Sea Clubrush (Bolboschoenus maritimus). Inland species inhabit swampy areas dominated by reed sweet-grass (Glyceria maxima) and vegetation bordering ponds and streams including Yellow Flag and Water Hemlock.
Distribution
Palaearctic distribution with European concentration. Records from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, France, Germany, Ukraine, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, and England. Within Britain, predominantly southern distribution with coastal concentration in south and east England (Solent, Thames Estuary, Wash, Humber Estuary) and scattered western records; some with inland in regions such as Cambridgeshire Fens. No confirmed Scottish records for some species; absent from Ireland.
Seasonality
on the wing from May to August, with peak activity typically June to July. Seasonal timing consistent across multiple .
Host Associations
- Elytrigia atherica (sea couch) - suggested larval Based on observations of mating pairs and exclusively on this plant; recorded in large numbers in Dutch coastal marshes. Association inferred from adult behavior, not confirmed larval .
- Artemisia maritima (sea wormwood) - rejected associationEarlier suggested association explicitly rejected by field observations.
- Phragmites australis (common reed) - larval developmentLarvae reported to develop in reed stems for M. omissa and M. crassipennis, though stages remain unknown for M. omissa.
- Glyceria maxima (reed sweet-grass) - associationSwampy areas dominated by this plant serve as for M. crassipennis.
Life Cycle
stage well-documented with May–August period. Larval remains poorly understood for most ; stages explicitly unknown for M. omissa. Larvae reported to live in stems of common reed (Phragmites australis) for some species, with development in other decaying plant matter also suggested. details limited and noted as 'poorly understood' in sources.
Behavior
Mating pairs and other observed exclusively on plants for some . M. picta appears more thermophilic than M. cana.
Similar Taxa
- M. crassipennisDistinguished from M. omissa by dark margins on abdominal tergites; M. omissa has unicoloured abdominal tergites.
- Other Melieria speciesM. omissa distinguished by broadly darkened present in other but absent in M. omissa; M. picta distinguished by fusion of two wing spots forming large wing spots and dark bands along tergite margins.
