It was originally described as Lejops polygrammus by Loew in 1872 and later transferred to the Asemosyrphus. The species belongs to the tribe Eristalini within the Eristalinae. It is a member of the 'rat-tail maggot flies,' a group whose larvae possess elongated, telescoping breathing siphons.
