The genus comprises approximately 45 described distributed across three subgenera: Periscepsia, Petinarctia, and Ramonda, plus several unplaced species. Tachinid flies in this genus are , though specific relationships for most Periscepsia species remain poorly documented. The genus has been recorded from Europe, North America, and parts of Asia and Africa.

Taxonomic history

Several were originally described in other and later transferred to Periscepsia, including species originally placed in Tachina, Dexia, and related tachinid genera.
