Mycetobiinae is a of Anisopodidae (wood gnats), an ancient of Diptera with fossil records extending to the Eocene. The subfamily includes extant such as Mycetobia and Mesochria, with the latter currently restricted to paleotropical regions but historically more widespread in the Northern Hemisphere. Members are small to medium-sized, gnat-like flies with controversial phylogenetic placement among lower Diptera.

Identification
Mycetobiinae can be distinguished from the other of Anisopodidae, the Anisopodinae, by genitalic and wing venation characters. The Mesochria is distinguished from Mycetobia by features of the male and female terminalia. Overall, Mycetobiinae lack the bizarrely spatulated seen in the anisopodid genera Olbiogaster and Lobogaster.

Distribution
Extant of Mesochria are paleotropical in distribution. Fossil records include: Eocene Oise amber (France) – first European record; Eocene Chinese amber; Miocene Dominican amber. The Mycetobia has been recorded from the Baltic States (Estonia) and is well represented in Baltic amber.
