Philonthina is the most diverse subtribe of rove beetles (Staphylinidae) within the tribe Staphylinini, containing over 500 described in the Neotropics alone. Members are predominantly with fully developed hind wings and capability, though brachypterous forms have evolved independently in high-altitude Andean lineages. The subtribe exhibits extensive diversification in Central and South America, where 87% of species are to the region.

Identification
Philonthina can be distinguished from other Staphylinini subtribes by combinations of morphological characters detailed in illustrated keys to level. Diagnostic features include characteristics of the , particularly the arrangement of sensory peg setae on the underside of the paramere, which show intergeneric and interspecific variation useful for identification. Brachypterous genera within the subtribe exhibit reduced hind wings and are restricted to high-altitude Andean .

Habitat
High-altitude montane in the Andes support brachypterous lineages, including the Andinolonthus and Brachylonthus. At least one genus, Delgadobius, has been reported in association with palm trees (Arecaceae) in Amazonian lowlands.
Distribution
distribution with exceptional diversity in Central and South America (CASA), where 543 described are currently recognized. Of these, 473 species (87%) are to CASA, 14 are , and 56 occur naturally elsewhere. Twenty of 31 in CASA are endemic to the region. Additional records from China, Europe, and other regions represent more limited diversity.

Phylogenetic insights
Total-evidence phylogenetic analyses have revealed complex patterns of hind wing evolution within the Neotropical lineage, including independent losses of capability in high-altitude clades and at least one instance of re-evolution of fully developed hind wings after loss.
Taxonomic instability
Recent phylogenetic work has prompted extensive generic reclassification, with numerous transferred between (e.g., 31 Philonthus species moved to Belonuchus, Gabrius, and Bisnius). The generic composition of the subtribe remains provisional pending comprehensive phylogenetic study.
Undescribed diversity
The actual of Philonthina in Central and South America is expected to substantially exceed current counts when poorly sampled regions and phylogenetic frameworks are fully explored.
