Identification

Distinguished from other North American Eucnecosum (E. tenue, E. brunnescens) by combination of morphological features detailed in the taxonomic revision, including body proportions and genitalic structures. Short-winged condition (brachyptery) is indicated by the species epithet. Taxonomic history

Originally described as Arpedium brachypterum by Gravenhorst in 1802; transferred to Eucnecosum by Lohse, a placement confirmed in the 1984 revision by Klimaszewski. A lectotype was designated for this in that revision.

Fossil record

One of few staphylinid with documented fossil occurrences: late Pliocene in Yukon Territory, Canada, and Pleistocene in Germany, indicating long-term persistence in environments.
