Identification

Members of Holopsis can be distinguished from other Corylophidae by their minute size and hooded body form. Specific diagnostic characters for the genus include features of the pronotum and elytral structure, though precise morphological distinctions from related genera require examination of genitalic and other fine structural characters. The genus is placed in tribe Peltinodini based on shared derived characters with related .

Distribution

Worldwide distribution excluding Afrotropical and Antarctic regions. Documented from Australia (H. brevicornis, H. pellucida, H. punctipennis), New Zealand (H. lawsoni, H. nigella, H. pallida, H. pictula, H. rotunda), North America including the United States (H. carolinae, H. convexa, H. flavoocella, H. impunctata, H. marginicollis, H. sphaericula, H. subtropica, H. virginica; Vermont specifically recorded), Europe (H. giga), Russia/Kuril Islands (H. kirejtshuki, H. kurilensis, H. lewisi), Japan/Ryukyu Islands (H. ryukyuensis), and South Africa (H. oblonga).

  • Other Corylophidae generaHolopsis shares the minute hooded beetle body plan with other members of Corylophidae; separation requires examination of pronotal and elytral microsculpture, antennal structure, and male genitalia. The is distinguished from related Peltinodini by specific character combinations established in revisionary work.

More Details

Taxonomic history

The was established by Thomas Broun in 1883 with New Zealand . Multiple species were later transferred from other genera or described by Casey, Matthews, and others. Bowestead (2003) described three species from the Kuril Islands (H. kirejtshuki, H. kurilensis, H. lewisi), and Furukawa (2012) described H. ryukyuensis from Japan. The genus shows a notable disjunct distribution with strong representation in both the Australasian and Nearctic regions.

Nomenclatural note

Authorship is consistently cited as Broun, 1883 across Catalogue of Life, GBIF, and NCBI. The iNaturalist summary stating 'about 9 described ' appears to be outdated; primary sources indicate more than 30 described species.
