Species were described primarily by Chemsak and Linsley between 1932 and 1986. The genus belongs to the tribe Hesperophanini within the Cerambycinae.

Taxonomic History
The was established by Linsley in 1957. Most were described by Chemsak and Linsley in 1963, with additional species described by Fisher (1932) and Chemsak and Giesbert (1986). Xeranoplium tricallosum was transferred from Hesperophanus (original combination: Hesperophanus tricallosus Knull, 1938).
