Taxonomic History

The has undergone extensive revision. Historical subgeneric divisions were abandoned in favor of eight -groups based on natural groupings. The genus Zimmermannius Guignot, 1941 was synonymized with Nebrioporus. Multiple species were transferred from Hydroporus and Deronectes.

Species Groups

Eight -groups are recognized: laeviventris (4 subgroups, 13 species), depressus (most speciose), sansii, abyssinicus, and four additional groups. The laeviventris-group was fully revised with two new species described from Crete (N. amicorum) and Iran (N. sagartus).

Type Designations

were designated for 15 during revision, including Hydroporus clarkii, Deronectes simplicipes, Deronectes anchoralis, Hydroporus kiliani, Deronectes seriatus, Deronectes arabicus, Deronectes islamiticus, Deronectes princeps, Hydroporus stearinus, Deronectes suavis, Hydroporus crotchi, Hydroporus insignis, Hydroporus semiclusus, Deronectes hostilis, and Hydroporus melanogrammus.
