The genus Ectobius was long considered exclusively Old World in origin, but fossil discoveries in the 49-million-year-old Green River Formation of Colorado revealed that Ectobius once occurred in North America before going extinct there. Modern Ectobius species, including E. lucidus, are found across Europe from northern regions to southern Africa. The species is one of several Ectobius cockroaches that have been documented in Europe.
