A small sheetweb spider in the Linyphiidae, known for building flat, horizontal webs close to the ground in grassy . Males are distinguished by a circular embolus on the , a diagnostic feature of the . The has a broad distribution across the Northern Hemisphere.

Identification

Males can be identified by the circular, hair-like embolus projecting from the —the structure through which sperm is transferred during mating. Females and immatures lack this feature and require examination of genitalia for definitive identification. The Microlinyphia is recognized by this embolus structure combined with the characteristic flat, sheet-like web built close to ground level.

Habitat

Grassy areas and low vegetation where flat, sheet-like webs are constructed just above the ground surface.

Distribution

North America, Europe, Caucasus, Russia (European to Far East), China, Ukraine, Britain, Ireland, and USA.

Behavior

males wander in search of mates during fall. Females and males remain on their webs, clinging upside down to the underside of the sheet. Morning dew can make webs more visible.
