Natada is a of slug caterpillar moths ( Limacodidae) established by Francis Walker in 1855. The genus comprises approximately 20 described distributed primarily in the Neotropical region, with some species ranging into North America. Members are characterized by distinctive wing venation patterns and palpal that separate them from related limacodid genera. The genus has been subject to modern taxonomic revision, particularly by Epstein and Corrales (2003, 2004), who described numerous new species from Central America.

Identification

Distinguished from other Limacodidae by the combination of: palpi extending beyond frontal tuft (not reduced or concealed); forewing with 8 and 9 stalked; and hindwing with veins 6 and 7 either from or short-stalked. The two pairs of hind tibial spurs also aid separation from some related genera. -level identification requires examination of genitalia and often geographic provenance, as many species were described recently and have subtle external differences.

Taxonomic History

The was extensively revised by Epstein and Corrales (2003, Revista de Biología Tropical 51: 445-462; 2004, Zootaxa 701: 1-86), who described multiple new from Rica and neighboring regions. This work nearly doubled the number of recognized species.

Species Diversity
