The genus contains two recognized : Microtheoris ophionalis (Walker, 1859) and Microtheoris vibicalis (Zeller, 1873). A third species, Microtheoris sesquialteralis, has been reclassified elsewhere. These moths are part of the diverse snout moth group characterized by their slender bodies and often distinctive wing patterns.

Taxonomic history
The was established by Edward Meyrick in 1932. Two were later transferred into it: Microtheoris ophionalis, originally described by Walker in 1859 as Botis ophionalis, and Microtheoris vibicalis, originally described by Zeller in 1873 as Botis vibicalis. Microtheoris sesquialteralis (Zeller, 1873) has been removed from this genus.
