Identification

Zizula are distinguished from other lycaenid by their extremely small size, with wingspans typically under 20 mm. They have rounded wings with relatively plain undersides marked by small, discrete spots. Zizula hylax is distinguished from Z. cyna by distribution and subtle differences in wing pattern; Z. cyna is restricted to the Neotropical region while Z. hylax has a much broader Old World distribution. The genus can be separated from similar small polyommatines like Chilades and Freyeria by wing shape and the arrangement of underside spotting.

Taxonomic history

The has undergone significant taxonomic revision. Zizula gaika, originally described from South Africa, was synonymized with Z. hylax following a 1967 ICZN ruling. The name Zizula escalantiana, listed in some databases, refers to a nymphalid (Prepona deiphile) and is not a valid Zizula .
