Proteides is a of spread-winged in the , distributed across the Neotropics. The genus contains two recognized : Proteides maysi, to Cuba, and the widespread Proteides mercurius, which occurs from South America through the Caribbean and into southern Arizona. The latter species exhibits considerable geographic variation, with numerous described across its range. The genus was established by in 1819 and is classified within the Pyrginae.

Neotropical region. Proteides maysi is restricted to Cuba. Proteides mercurius occurs in South America (including French Guiana and Suriname), the Caribbean (Cuba, Dominica, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Haiti, Saint Vincent, Grenada), and extends into the United States in southern Arizona.
