Originally described as Melissodes petulca Cresson, 1878, with authorship sometimes cited as 1879. The was later transferred to the Svastra. Two are recognized: Svastra petulca petulca (Cresson, 1878) and Svastra petulca suffusa (Cresson, 1878).
