Xylophagus lugens is a of fly in the Xylophagidae, first described by Loew in 1863. The species is distributed across Canada and the United States. Xylophagidae, commonly known as awl-flies, are a small family of predatory flies closely related to Stratiomyidae (soldier flies). Members of this family are typically found in wooded and are associated with decaying wood.
