Dryomyza is a of acalyptrate flies in the Dryomyzidae, comprising 11 described including two fossils. The genus has been extensively studied for its mating , particularly in D. anilis, which exhibits complex postcopulatory interactions including repeated copulation bouts and distinctive tapping sequences. D. formosa has been documented in Japan and associated with a single case of suspected intestinal myiasis.

Distribution

Documented from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Vermont, United States (GBIF records). D. formosa specifically recorded from Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.

Behavior

In D. anilis, mating consists of repeated copulation and oviposition bouts with the male remaining mounted. Each copulation bout includes intromission followed by multiple tapping sequences where the male touches the female's external genitalia with his claspers. Males adjust mating based on female maturity status and egg load. Female size and egg number at mating onset influence the number of copulation bouts and tapping sequences. Size-related male movement affects spatial and temporal distribution at female oviposition sites.

Human Relevance

D. formosa has been implicated in one case of suspected intestinal myiasis in Japan, apparently due to accidental ingestion; this represents the first recorded instance of myiasis associated with the Dryomyza.
