It belongs to the D. schaumii-group, which includes four other Neotropical : D. angustiformis, D. argentinus, D. brunneus, and D. curtipennis. The species was synonymised with D. vilis Sharp, 1885. It has a broad geographic range spanning North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
