Philonthus umbratilis is a rove beetle in the Staphylinidae, originally described from Europe and now widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. The has been introduced to North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Like other members of the Philonthus, it is a predatory associated with decaying organic matter. The species exhibits the characteristic shortened and flexible typical of staphylinid beetles.
