Scopaeus is a of rove beetles in the Staphylinidae, Paederinae. The genus has a distribution with documented occurrences across Europe, the eastern Mediterranean, and Anatolia. Some have been subject to recent taxonomic revision, including the clarification of synonymy for Scopaeus pilicornis. The genus contains multiple species groups, such as the S. elegans group, with new species continuing to be described from underexplored regions.

Taxonomic history

Scopaeus pilicornis Baudí, 1869 was long misunderstood in the literature until a 1997 revision established its true identity and placed Scopaeus microphthalmus Epelsheim, 1888 in synonymy. The subgenus Microscopaeus has been recognized within Scopaeus.

Species groups

are organized into informal groups, such as the Scopaeus elegans group, which has been the focus of recent taxonomic work in Turkey.
