The genus was established by Dejean in 1833 and exhibits substantial diversity, particularly in the Palearctic region where many species are to restricted geographic areas. Species-level remains active, with numerous new species described from Turkey and surrounding regions in recent decades.

Distribution

Documented from Europe (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) and extensively from Turkey, where numerous occur in western, central, and northern Anatolia. The subgenus Eurysunius alone contains 31 species in Turkey, 30 of which are endemic to the country. Species have been collected from mountainous regions including Çökelez Mountain, Bozdağlar, Akdağlar, Murat Mountain, and Honaz Mountain.
