Taxonomic History

The was erected by Brown in 1927 to accommodate previously placed in other genera. The type species and original are based on morphological characters distinct from the closely related genus Ataenius.

Species Diversity

Only three are currently recognized: Pseudataenius contortus (Cartwright, 1974), Pseudataenius gracilitarsis (Petrovitz, 1973), and Pseudataenius socialis (Horn, 1871). The latter was originally described in the Aphodius and later transferred.
