Cardiophorus is a of click beetles ( Elateridae) comprising at least 180 described distributed worldwide. The genus was established by Eschscholtz in 1829 and is classified in the Cardiophorinae. Species in eastern North America have been taxonomically revised, with 11 species recognized including three recently described. of at least one species, C. cardisce, have been documented to exhibit burrowing .

Taxonomic status

Cardiophorus is the type of Cardiophorinae within Elateridae. Recent revisionary work in eastern North America synonymized C. floridae and C. angustatus under C. convexus, and designated lectotypes and neotypes for multiple to stabilize .

Species diversity

The contains at least 180 described globally, making it one of the more species-rich genera in Cardiophorinae. Eleven species are recognized in eastern North America, including C. catskillensis, C. destinensis, and C. panamapolis, all described as new species in 2002.
