Identification

Identification to level in Pachybrachis requires examination of genitalia and other subtle morphological characters. The is distinguished from related cryptocephaline genera by the combination of small size, rounded body form, and antennal structure. P. picturatus specifically would require comparison with type material or authoritative keys; the species name suggests patterned or painted appearance. Similar occur in the same geographic range and types.

Habitat

Based on collection records from the southwestern United States, occurs in oak/juniper woodland and mesquite/acacia scrub . Specifically recorded from mercury-vapor and ultraviolet light stations in mesquite/acacia scrub.

Distribution

North America. Documented from southeastern Arizona (Huachuca Mountains, Santa Rita Mountains region) based on recent field observations. Broader distribution within southwestern North America likely but requires confirmation from specimen records.

Seasonality

active in late July based on field observations from Arizona. This timing coincides with the summer monsoon season in the region.

Behavior

are attracted to ultraviolet and mercury-vapor lights at night. This has been documented in mesquite/acacia scrub in southeastern Arizona.

Collection context

Specimens were collected by Ted C. MacRae during fieldwork in southeastern Arizona in late July 2021, specifically at a light station in mesquite/acacia scrub. The collector noted obtaining 'a nice series of two of Pachybrachis' that were to be sent to Bob Barney for identification.
