Species Guides
1- Gibbobruchus mimus(redbud bruchid)
Gibbobruchus is a of seed beetles in the Bruchinae (Chrysomelidae), first described by Pic in 1913. The genus contains approximately seven described distributed in the Americas. Members are primarily associated with seeds of Bauhinia (Fabaceae) and related genera in the tribe Cercideae. The genus has been subject to recent taxonomic revision, with new species described from the Amazon basin and phylogenetic analyses supporting monophyly and distinct species groups.

Identification
Gibbobruchus can be distinguished from related bruchine by morphological characters including body shape and integumental sculpturing. The genus is supported by seven synapomorphies in phylogenetic analysis. Species-level identification requires examination of genitalia and other detailed morphological features; an updated identification key is available in recent taxonomic revisions.

Habitat
Associated with plants in the tribe Cercideae (Caesalpinioideae), primarily Bauhinia . include areas where host plants occur, including regions of the Amazon basin.
Distribution
New World distribution, primarily in the Americas. Documented from Brazil (including Acre), Ecuador (Napo), and Colombia. Four have new distribution records based on recent revisionary work.
Diet
Seed-feeding. Larvae develop within seeds of plants.
Host Associations
- Bauhinia argentinensis - first record for and
- Bauhinia tarapotensis - first record for and
- Bauhinia - primary main association for
- Cercideae (Caesalpinioideae) - tribeconserved plant association at tribe level
Ecological Role
Seed . As seed-feeding bruchines, larvae consume developing seeds, potentially affecting plant recruitment and seed bank dynamics.
Similar Taxa
- Other Bruchinae generaGibbobruchus is distinguished by morphological synapomorphies and associations with Cercideae; other bruchine typically associate with different host plant groups or exhibit different morphological features.
More Details
Taxonomic history
Gibbobruchus was revised by Manfio & Ribeiro-, who recognized 13 in four species groups: speculifer, polycoccus, wunderlini, scurra, and mimus. New synonyms were proposed: G. triangularis and G. nigronotatus synonymized with G. cavillator.
Phylogenetic insights
plant use shows evolutionary conservation at the tribe level (Cercideae), with coordination between biogeographic expansion and shifts among host within this tribe.
