Gibbobruchus

Pic, 1913

pea and bean weevils, seed beetles

Gibbobruchus is a of in the Bruchinae (), first described by Pic in 1913. The genus contains approximately seven described distributed in the Americas. Members are primarily associated with seeds of Bauhinia (Fabaceae) and related genera in the tribe Cercideae. The genus has been subject to recent taxonomic revision, with new species described from the Amazon basin and phylogenetic analyses supporting and distinct species groups.

Identification

Gibbobruchus can be distinguished from related bruchine by morphological characters including body shape and integumental sculpturing. The genus is supported by seven in phylogenetic analysis. Species-level identification requires examination of and other detailed morphological features; an updated identification is available in recent taxonomic revisions.

Taxonomic history

Gibbobruchus was revised by Manfio & Ribeiro-, who recognized 13 in four species groups: speculifer, polycoccus, wunderlini, scurra, and mimus. New synonyms were proposed: G. triangularis and G. nigronotatus synonymized with G. cavillator.

Phylogenetic insights

use shows evolutionary at the tribe level (Cercideae), with coordination between biogeographic expansion and shifts among host within this tribe.
