Taxonomic history
The was established by Jan Stach in 1955. The type is Heterosminthurus bilineatus (Bourlet, 1842), originally described in the genus Sminthurus. The genus has undergone significant revision, with many species described or redescribed by Günter Bretfeld and Wolfgang Zöllner in a 2000 monograph.
Species diversity
Approximately 30 are currently recognized. The shows notable diversity in Europe and extends into Arctic and Sub-arctic regions. Several species have been described from Japan (Yosii, 1970-1972) and North America (Maynard, 1951; Snider, 1969, 1987).
