Sosticus

Chamberlin, 1922

Sosticus is a of ground in the Gnaphosidae, established by R. V. Chamberlin in 1922. The genus contains ten described distributed across North America, Europe, and South Asia. Most species are known from India, with additional representatives in the United States, Canada, and Europe. One species, Sosticus loricatus, has been to North America from its Palearctic range.

Sosticus insularis occurs in the United States and Canada; Sosticus californicus is restricted to California; Sosticus loricatus is native to Europe, the Caucasus, Russia, Iran, Central Asia, and China, and has been to North America. Seven are to India: Sosticus dherikanalensis, Sosticus jabalpurensis, Sosticus nainitalensis, Sosticus pawani, Sosticus poonaensis, Sosticus solanensis, and Sosticus sundargarhensis.

Taxonomic history

The was established by R. V. Chamberlin in 1922. The , Sosticus insularis, was originally described as Gnaphosa insularis by Banks in 1895 before being transferred to Sosticus.
