Definition
A of orthopteran insects in the suborder , distributed primarily across the southern hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, southern Africa, and South America). Members are characterized by large body size, long , and robust ; they occupy diverse from forest leaf litter to caves. The family includes familiar such as (Australia, South Africa) and wētā (New Zealand), and has been treated under junior synonyms Mimnermidae or Henicidae in some classifications.

Etymology
From Greek anostos (not returning) + stoma (mouth), possibly alluding to mandibular structure; suffix -idae

The Parktown prawn (Libanasidus vittatus), a large flightless notorious in Johannesburg suburbs, and the giant wētā (Deinacrida spp.) of New Zealand, among the heaviest insects in the world, are both members of Anostostomatidae.
