The specific epithet "dubitans" is Latin for "doubting," reflecting taxonomic uncertainty at the time of description. Records indicate occurrence in the United States across Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. The species belongs to the subgenus Revolvens within the genus Agathidium.
