  • Rhizophagus

Rhizophagus is a genus of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the family Glomeraceae, phylum Glomeromycota. These fungi form obligate symbiotic associations with the roots of most terrestrial plants, facilitating nutrient exchange. The genus includes extensively studied species such as Rhizophagus irregularis, which serves as a model organism for understanding arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. Rhizophagus species enhance plant performance by improving water and mineral uptake, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, while receiving carbon compounds from their hosts.
