The species was originally described by Rehn in 1907 under the name Xanthippus sierra but has since been reclassified. It belongs to the Oedipodinae, a group characterized by enlarged hind wings used in display . Distribution records indicate presence in the western United States including California, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah.
