The genus was erected by Henry Walter Bates in 1868 and has been the subject of recent taxonomic revision based on morphological . Habitat

Tropical semi-deciduous and deciduous forests below 1000 meters elevation. In Mexico, the has been recorded across 11 of 14 biogeographical provinces, with highest diversity in Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz.

Neotropical region from southeastern U.S.A. (Texas) through Mexico, Central America, and South America to Argentina. In Mexico specifically: 314 localities across 24 states, with highest in Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz.
