Empria maculata is a of in the Tenthredinidae, first described by Norton in 1861. The Empria comprises small, slender sawflies commonly known as 'striped sawflies' due to their distinctive color patterns. Empria maculata is recorded from several Canadian provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, Labrador, and Manitoba. As with other members of Tenthredinidae, are -like in appearance but lack the narrow waist characteristic of true wasps.
