Solieria is a of red (Rhodophyta) in the Solieriaceae, order Gigartinales. Atlantic possess terete to slightly compressed, irregularly branched thalli with a distinctive filamentous medulla composed of refractive ganglionic surrounded by a pseudoparenchymatous cortex. The genus is characterized by multiaxial growth from clusters of four to eight obconical cells, with periaxial cells producing branched, laterally diverging filaments that form the cortex.

Identification

Distinguished from other Solieriaceae by the presence of auxiliary ampullae containing 3–5 subsidiary cells and cruciate tetrasporangia. Atlantic exhibit multiaxial growth with 4–8 obconical cells; periaxial cells are cut off singly from each axial cell and rotated 120° in a zig-zag pattern along axial filaments.

Distribution

Atlantic Ocean, including western Atlantic (Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Brazil) and eastern Atlantic (Mediterranean, West Africa).

Diet

Photosynthetic .

Life Cycle

Triphasic typical of Gigartinales, with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes. involves 3-celled carpogonial branches with reflexed trichogynes; triggers formation of an auxiliary complex. A single unbranched connecting filament fuses with the auxiliary cell, stimulating involucre production and gonimoblast initiation. Mature cystocarps contain terminal carposporangia surrounded by an involucre with a distinct .

Ecological Role

Benthic primary producer contributing to subtidal algal and providing structure.

Human Relevance

Source of carrageenan, a commercially valuable polysaccharide used in food and industrial applications.
