Taxonomic history

The was established by Samuel Wendell Williston in 1897 with Gastrops niger as the . Additional species were described through the 20th century, with the most recent addition being G. ringueleti described by Lizarralde de Grosso in 1984.

Eight are currently recognized: G. auropunctatus, G. bicuspidatus, G. flavipes, G. fuscivenosus, G. nebulosus, G. niger, G. ringueleti, and G. willistoni.
