The was erected by Daniel William Coquillett in 1902 with H. obscura as the type . Several species were later transferred from other genera, including H. remotinervis (originally described in Phyllomyza by Strobl, 1902) and H. washingtona (originally described in Phyllomyza by Melander, 1913).
