Taxonomic history

The was erected by Daniel William Coquillett in 1898 with Henicomyia hubbardii as the type . Six additional species were described by Lyneborg in 1972, significantly expanding the genus.

Species composition

Seven are currently recognized: H. amazonica, H. bicolor, H. diversicolor, H. flava, H. hubbardii, H. nigra, and H. tomentosa. Most species were described from Brazilian material.
