As a member of the diverse Oxypoda, it belongs to the Aleocharinae, one of the largest groups within the rove beetles. The species is known from and temperate regions of North America, with records spanning much of Canada and extending into the northern United States.

Taxonomic note
This was described relatively recently (2006) by Polish-Canadian entomologist Jan Klimaszewski, who has extensively revised the Aleocharinae of North America. The Oxypoda contains numerous species, many of which are difficult to distinguish without detailed examination of genitalic structures.
