The genus contains at least two described : Omethes marginatus (LeConte, 1861) and Omethes rugiceps (Lewis, 1895). Members of this genus belong to the superfamily Elateroidea and are classified within the suborder Polyphaga. The family Omethidae is a small group of beetles formerly treated as part of Cantharidae.

Omethidae was historically treated as a of Cantharidae (soldier beetles) but is now recognized as a distinct , with Omethes placed in the subfamily Omethinae.
Species diversity
